Finally: America Moves Up on the Freedom Index

Measuring the degree of freedom in America is a good-news-bad-news proposition.

The good news is that we moved up 7 places in the rankings in 2017 – the first year of the Trump presidency – from the previous year.

The bad news is that even after last year’s rise, America still ranks only #17 out of the 159 countries ranked.

Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the UK … and even Estonia are freer than the U.S.

Since 2008 the Cato Institute and the Fraser Institute have collaborated to develop the Human Freedom Index … ranking nations from most free to least free by scoring them using 79 indicators of both personal and economic freedom.

For decades, the U.S. was among the top 3 most free nations in the world … until government began expanding – infringing on personal liberties – and confiscating more and more of its citizens’ income through massive spending and increased taxes.

Liberty is a zero-sum game … when government grows and assumes more responsibility and power … the more it infringes on the rights and liberties of the individual.

Since the early 1960s – when the entire federal budget was less than $100 billion a year – 6 new cabinet-level departments have been added to the federal government … adding over 400,000 government employees and about $225 billion in additional government spending every year.

At the end of the Clinton administration, the national debt was $5.629 trillion.

At the end of the George W. Bush administration – after the creation of the Department of Homeland Security in 2002 and the financial crisis and subsequent bank bailout of 2008 – the debt was $9.986 trillion.

President Obama left the U.S. with a $19.98 trillion debt on the last day of 2016 – more than double what he inherited in 2009. Here’s how he did it:

  • He rammed a nearly $1 trillion “stimulus” package through Congress.
  • His policies increased unemployment from less than 8% to 10% … real unemployment was nearly twice that high.
  • He initiated a federal takeover of health care … driving up costs and reducing access.

Obama also reduced personal freedom by:

  • Approving government spying on every American without a warrant
  • Stifling religious freedom by forcing Americans to act in violation of their deeply-held religious beliefs or face punishment by the government

The U.S. dropped from #16 on the Global Freedom Index to #24 during the Obama administration.

In contrast, President Trump issued an executive order stipulating that for every new regulation implemented by a federal agency, two must be repealed.

The executive order has far exceeded expectations – for every new regulation added, 22 have been repealed!

For every government regulation repealed, individual freedom increases…

Here are some of the other changes President Trump has initiated which have made the U.S. a freer nation:

  • He has reined in the EPA – creating a positive impact on property rights.
  • The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has increased the wages of millions of employees and enabled companies to create thousands of new jobs.
  • He has reversed Obama-era restrictions on people of faith
  • He has nominated conservative judges who honor the enumerated powers principle of the Constitution and do not legislate from the bench.
  • He appointed a school choice advocate as Secretary of Education, giving parents more freedom to choose and direct the education of their children.
  • He is seeking to divest vast land in the West from federal control and free it up for private purchase and use.

The more President Trump is able to accomplish in “draining the swamp” of career politicians who want to control every aspect of our lives through government rules and regulations, the freer we will become.

  1. I find it hard to believe they have more freedom in Sweden than here. I understand things got worse under Obama, but in Sweden and elsewhere things are just as bad, at least it seems so from the stories I read.

  2. I don’t know why I am doing this because I don’t know if you will really publish the TRUTH! TRUTH is Jesus Christ & that was HIS direct comment! But regarding man’s ability to rate godly righteousness is greatly amiss. Yes, its great that someone thinks America is improving & it may be some due to some of Pres Trump’s views but no nation will be righteous until Christ comes back & sets up God, the Father’s Kingdom. Daniel 11 & Matthew 24 indicate that in the last part of the end times that lawlessness, wickedness, & injustice will come to complete expression. America has disobeyed God, is killing more unborns taking the blood of the incident than any nation, has legalized LGBT lifestyles & so on, so the curses of Deut 28 & Lev 26 are upon us. America is heading for destruction due to its sin, as sin only produces death. Yes, God still has mercy but not for nations but for individuals who truly repent & stop sinning. Pres Trump talks about God but never talks about his & America’s sins that we must repent of. Like the American lukewarm church, it gives the grace & forgiveness message but doesn’t talk about the judgment of God that is on disobedient Christians. Woe to those who speak only about grace, for our God is both goodness & severity according to the Book of Romans or in other words, God is truly kind & forgiving to the truly humble & repenting but he is a punisher of prideful & disobedient Christians first. Just read the Old Testament & you see that God raised up ungodly nations to punish HIS own children (nations of Israel & Judah) & then turns HIS wrath on the ungodly after. America based on its founders is gone & we are in the generations of Noah, Lot & the coming beast political system & America will already have been destroyed or be apart of it. It takes over the whole world! Only those Christians who are living a truly holy & worthy life according to God’s measurement on them will be saved, if they endure to the end. While, you may be thinking who am I to say all of this. Well! I have been preaching since 1969, been beat up by the Black Panthers, threatened by the Hell Angels, done city-wide Crusades with the like of Nicky Cruz, started churches from Alaska to Washington, DC, taught in Bible Schools, traveled in ministry teams with Apostles & Prophets, I have led many to the Lord, water baptized them, performed healings & miracles & gifts of the Spirit by the grace of God & discipled many. I have learned some things about the character of God & both sides of WHO HE IS. What I have done earns me no specific place with God as I work out my salvation daily with fear & trembling, as the fear of God is the beginning of all knowledge. I usually don’t do this sort of thing but I felt God wanted me to. May God have mercy on the truly repentant!

  3. I’m glad to see your comment. I have a couple of disagreements with what you’ve said though. I believe that in China and Russia the abortion rates are greater, and they may be greater in Sweden. The LGBTQ movement is worldwide and is promoted by the UN. President Trump has given us a little time to perhaps do something more for our sinful country. Hillary Clinton would have put in place more of what Obama gave us, homosexual marriage and the like. The entire government has been making laws, decrees and rulings against Christianity since at least the end of the second world war. We have a bit of sunshine at the moment, from an unexpected source, President Trump, nothing more. I’m grateful to God for it and pray we will have more, so you and others can do your work.

  4. Thanks Rebecca! I agree with you & my statistics may be off but the point I was making is that we all are sinners & our only hope is truly repenting. It is interesting that the subject of sin & disobedience to God is hardly discussed, even in so-called Christian churches. As far as my personal sin & wicked ways (as all hearts are deceived & wicked per Jeremaih), they are I am sure way more then Trump’s. I do find it interesting that after we had hurricanes Pres Trump, VP Pence & others (both politicians & ministers) all quoted 2 Chr 7:14 & they qll wanted the land healed but whqt did God send but another hurricane & much more disasters. They all left out the point that God only hears the prayers to heal the land if God’s people are turning from their wicked ways & repenting first. Words don’t change God but a holy lifestyle can. God hears a righteous man & his prayers prevail. It is also interesting that no one talks about one of God’s requirements are that people are seeking HIS FACE. If you study about the fiery face of God with piercing eyes & the mouth of the Word of God that pierces to the heart & is a discerner of the motives & intents of our heart, you will see that seeking HIS FACE is asking for correction & revealing of one’s sins. Like King David says “show me my sins.” Oh! Well! I hope that so-called Christians are not just confessing the name but are really living it or they will be caught up by the “great delusion” that is spreading over the earth. What really matters is living your life in a way that God will look at you & say well done! Personally, I like many things about Trump & appreciate that he makes some good decisions that are positive for Christians but believe me when the beast & false prophet show up soon, they are going to be a lot like Christ. The first thing Christ said to his disciples about the coming of the end was to not be deceived by all the false prophets, apostles, & Christian teachers. Jeremiah & Isaiah & others true prophets of their time were warning that God’s people were going to be destroyed & punished for their sins but all the rest of the prophets were talking about God blessing. We are in the last part of the end times, & deception is going to be great & a great falling away from true Christian 100% discipleship is has already happened & is increasing. May the Lord bless you in your obedience! Rick
