What is December 25th?
Is it Christmas Day … or is it ‘Holidays Day’?
Is it a commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ? Or is it a commemoration of a gift-giving Saint Nicholas … or a commemoration of something else?
Whatever one’s religious or non-religious beliefs, December 25th has been set aside in the U.S. as Christmas (Christ’s mass) – the day celebrated as the birthday of Jesus of Nazareth – ever since 1870.
Whether you are a Christian or not, if you celebrate Christmas, it’s okay to say “Merry Christmas” in response to someone saying “Happy Holidays.”
You don’t need to worry about offending those who might not celebrate the birth of Jesus…
If they are offended by the historical person of Jesus of Nazareth – or if they are offended by the words “Merry Christmas,” it’s their problem, not yours.
Don’t let their intolerance become your intolerance of your own beliefs and practices.
Watch these two videos about saying “Merry Christmas” (each is 3 ½ minutes).
