Across America, complaints about church noise … traffic … lights … and many other things … are increasing.
Let me tell you about the attack on one growing church…
Whenever I’ve been in North Carolina, I’ve loved attending Elevation Church…
But some of the neighbors of the 1600-seat Ballantyne campus that opened in 2016 don’t love them…
They’ve turned to local police – and to a TV news outlet – to complain about the amount of joyful noise coming from the Southern Baptist megachurch.
They say the church is disturbing their peaceful lives…
“We can hear the music; we can hear the yelling and screaming going on when they are having outside activities,” one neighbor said.
“It is a hard thing to have to do, to call 911 on a church,” said another.
The local police captain responded to the complaining neighbors, telling them in an email that he had sent officers to the church to talk to the staff about the noise … and that he would ask his off-duty officers who attend the church to also monitor the noise.
Ballantyne campus pastor Jonathan Josephs also revealed in an email that off-duty police officers regularly attend the church … and help ensure that the noise from the worship music “is reasonable and within the limits of city ordinances.”
He added: “On the few occasions when we have received complaints, the police have assured us that we were not violating any noise ordinances. Our intent is to be good members of the communities we serve, and we will continue to cooperate with law enforcement should any issues arise.”
As Christians, we need to be sensitive and respectful to all … but we must not forget the command in Psalm 100:1-2 …
“Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful singing.”
In any community there are a few who will use any pretense to stir up others to oppose and restrict a church … and to stop expansion and growth.
Elevation church was founded in 2006 … and is one of the fastest-growing and largest megachurches in the U.S.
Led by Pastor Steven Furtick, the church has 17 locations from Florida to Canada … 9 of those locations are in the greater Charlotte area of North Carolina.
