Shocking Truth: Shrinking Number Believe the Bible Is the Word of God

Craig HueyChurch, Culture, God's Word6 Comments

In a Gallup Poll, only 24 percent of Americans believe the Bible is the literal Word of God.

In 1984, that number was 40 percent, and it’s been eroding ever since.

Today, only one in four believe the Bible is “the actual Word of God and is to be taken literally, word for word.”

It is the lowest number in Gallup’s 40-year trending.

This shift is most pronounced among young adults.

The largest segment falls in the middle: 47 percent, believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, but that not all of it should be taken literally.

The poll also found that 71 percent continue to view the Bible as a holy document and is at least God-inspired.

  1. And it’s going to get far worse!

The failure of America’s pulpits to admonish their flocks to represent biblical-absolutes in society and government has created a ‘Christ-void’ filled by biblical-relativism and political pluralism. All of which has increased polytheism and the associated unbiblical moral law-orders. Tolerance for polytheism (all gods are equal) leads to relativism (unbiblical moral codes are equally valid to biblical-absolutes); relativism leads to enlightened-humanism (self-glorifying man makes unbiblical laws); and humanism leads to statism (self proclaimed ‘enlightened ones’ represent the pinnacle of power). And ultimately, the state secures its power through democide – often murdering those who fear and love God more than they fear the state (See:

Biblical-relativism has lead to ‘do-nothingism’ (passive-waiting), versus “active service” for Christ as commanded throughout God’s Word. James 1:22 – – But be doers of the word, and not hearers only deceiving yourselves.

Most churches teach an experiential and emotionalized version of Christianity encouraging passive-waiting while editing out the primary purpose for our creation – to glorify God with worship, prayer, AND WORKS. Hence the reason James Chapter-2 14-26 warns in 7 different verses that: James 2:20 – – But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 2:24 – – You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

For those claiming Christ who analyze events to achieve the outcome of “no action necessary on my part,” the affects of biblical-relativism in destroying America can only be ’the providence of God,’ ’the end times,’ or the like.

But for those analyzing this biblical-relativism for truth, the evidence is clear. Since the early 1900s Christianity has increasingly transitioned from a ‘faith with a godly fixation on glorifying Christ with works,’ to a religion creating ‘happy sheep on their way to slaughter with children and grandchildren in-tow.’ Representation of Christ once having catalyzed events like the fights against British tyrants and slavery, healthcare by Christians (not government), and bringing Christ to those not knowing Him are now rare.
Those claiming Christ but not finding Christ worth representing in society and government to the exclusion of biblical-relativism will always ‘reap what they sow’ – a disintegrating nation using humanist reasoning to solve societal and governmental pathologies only biblical-absolutes can remedy.

  2. Every church I have gone to over the past 10 years repeats the same set of verses and teachings over and over again. And they are always the teachings telling us how much God loves us and other wonderful things, but they hardly ever focus on the teachings that should have us taking action in our city, state, or country.

Why would non-Christians assume the writings in the Bible are the true word of God when all but a few Christians in America don’t act like it is the word of God? America is being destroyed more every year because most churches spend their time talking about the rapture, what Jesus will do for me, and everything except for how Christians are supposed to be obedient and glorifying God through actions. Why would those attending churches assume the Bible is the actual word of God, when they attend church where the ‘easy-believism’ portions of the Bible are continually focused on while the portions of the Bible commanding us to take action are given little attention?

The reason the amount of Americans believing that the Bible is the word of God is declining, is because those talking-Jesus pick and choose which parts of the Bible they will implement in their lives and country. And with so many Christians acting like the bible requires no action on their part to represent biblical absolutes throughout their nation, why should other people take it seriously?

  3. Obviously, something’s not working right – we Christians have been trying to bring more people to a saving knowledge of Jesus, that will produce a mature Christian life glorifying to God – however, things seem to be going the opposite way.

As somebody who does ‘failure analysis’ for a living, it’s easy to see there’s a moral problem in our country (i.e. evil seems to be gradually winning over good). In order to fix a problem, you first have to identify its cause. The normal process to ID a problem is to remove variables from the list of potential causes, and then whittle it down to the actual culprit.

For instance, we have more Christian-themed organizations, videos, printed materials, concerts, music, missionaries, conventions, television shows, etc. than at any other time in history, and still, we see Christian principles and values are in decline in the US. It’s obviously not the lack of these things causing the problem – these resources are more abundant than ever. (Conversely, we have to assume these things must not be helping the situation either…). Strike this one off the list!

So, what is left? What could be causing this decline? I tend to agree with the folks above. They make a good point – one that has to be looked at, evaluated, and if found to be true, then acted upon. At least their assessment of the problem passes enough scrutiny to remain on the list of potential causes for America’s declining belief in the Word of God.

What else could it be? I’m not it’s one thing only, but I’m willing to continue the failure analysis to find out – the stakes are too high not to fix this problem!

  4. MIKE , who made a comment above spelled out clearly, with one exception, “in today’s society, moral absolutes, has been replaced with … “MORAL RELATIVISM”…… simply put, do as as you feel !!!!!!………Today, Moral Relativism say’s , if you as a man feel feminine , than being female, “transgender” is your cure !!!! Not so fast, …45 % of tormented Switch (Transgender) hitter’s are attempting suicide daily………The main point here is , our past of “Moral Absolutes” , has been replaced with “Moral Relativism”……..not biblical relativism as commented by MIKE !!!!!

  5. Response to ERIC LEMASTERS stating that, “The main point here is , our past of “Moral Absolutes” , has been replaced with “Moral Relativism”……..not biblical relativism as commented by MIKE !!!!!”

Eric, you are correct about the effects of moral relativism, but you’ve got the proverbial ‘cart before the horse.’

Moral relativism has increased due to biblical-relativism infecting our churches that has created a ‘Christ-void’ in society and government – by rarely remind Christians of their obligation to represent Christ in society and government to the exclusion of moral relativism. Ultimately leading to the murder of 55 million unborn children and many other godless national pathologies.

Had those populating the vast majority he of today’s pulpits, populated the pulpits in this land in the 1700s-1800s, America would likely never have been founded and slavery may well have remained legal – because there would have been minimal church leadership admonishing their flocks of their biblical duty to oppose evildoers.

Many in church leadership justify America’s existing trajectory toward national-suicide, on ‘end-times scenarios’ and anything else relieving them of their responsibility to admonish their flocks of their obligation to represent Christ in society and government to the exclusion of evildoers, by aiding the needy, and bringing Christ to those in America not knowing Him.

If you read enough sermons hand-recorded between 1620 and 1900 (I’ve read 72) you will see that the fight against British tyrants and slavery along with the minimization of other God offending societal and governmental pathologies occurred because enough in church leadership admonished their flocks to engage in representation of Christ to displace moral relativist tyrants.

The existence of mass God offending moral relativism in America today is a symptom of the greater disease of biblical-relativism occurring in churches where the bible is edited to omit the command to represent Christ in society and government to the exclusion of God offending world-views and governance.
