Bible Reading skyrocketed in 2020.

Why?

Because of the fear of the virus and the extreme stress of the lockdowns.

Scripture provided comfort and hope.

Searches on YouVersion soared by 80%…600 million searches worldwide.

What was the most read verse?

Isaiah 41:10.

It says: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Other top searches saw people looking at:

John 3:16.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Jeremiah 29:11.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

2 Chronicles 7:14.

“If my people who are called by name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

This verse has been used greatly during the political campaigns of 2020.

There were some differences by country.

In Ghana, it was Philippians 4:8.

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

In Kenya, it was Romans 8:28.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

These were digital reads (or listens) on the YouVersion App. We assume it’s the same for the physical reading of God’s word. 65% of Bible readers prefer paper book reading over digital.

  1. For me it was 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (NKJV).”

  2. I love both verses I guess the Lord knew there were going to be many who were fearful, I that Him daily that I am not a fearful person. I think because as I grew us I had parents that I knew loved me I loved them. And that love I know came from the Lord. Thank you Jesus for your Beautiful Love for your children. I pray you pour out your love & protection on Craig & his family. Bless him dear Lord.
