“More is less” in the weird world of Washington, D.C. politics

Our standard of living is growing lower, not higher, thanks to the fiscal irresponsibility of our elected “representatives” in Washington.

Less economic growth, less technological innovation and less jobs and pay increases—are all a result of the MORE reckless spending by politicians.

Bankers and Wall Street investors who loan the government money and get paid huge interest on those loans are doing beyond well. Countries that buy our treasuries (like China) are also doing well and dictating some of our policies…because they control the purse strings!

At the time of the first $700 Billion dollar bailout, China surpassed Japan as the government’s largest foreign creditor. Now, China owns nearly $1 out of every $10 in U.S. public debt—and that means Washington will be increasingly forced to rely on Beijing as it seeks to raise money.

The Bible says in Proverbs 22:7: “…and the borrower is servant to the lender.” We are a slave to China in many terrible ways.

Forget about the U.S. objections to China’s forced abortions and religious persecutions or any other issue.

China, in fact, may be the government's largest creditor, but the U.S. Treasury doesn’t keep records on domestic bond holders, so the exact extent of our debt is impossible to calculate.

Economists point to the following consequences that will hurt the poor, the middle class and upper income Americans. There will be:

A little-known fact you won’t see in the media is that last year the U.S. poverty rate rose in the U.S. for the first time in 50 years.

If policy doesn’t change quickly, this will be the first generation in America that will live at a lower standard of living than their parents.

As Christians, we need to vote for candidates who wish to reverse or purge policies that curtail economic growth by:

…so that small and large businesses can grow and expand.

Favorite 2010 Presidential candidate?

An eye-opening meeting of social conservatives from coast to coast…

I just got back from the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., the largest gathering of social and Christian conservatives in America—over 2,000 attendees.

Many candidates from the 2008 Presidential race spoke...as well as potential candidates for 2012. 

Every year attendees vote for their favorite candidates for President—this time for 2012.

I was surprised by this year’s winner—Congressman Mike Pence (R-Indiana)—and even more surprised by his presentation. He started his talk by saying, “I am a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order.”

Then, he focused on Obama’s unnecessarily cold treatment of Israel and the federal overspending led by Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic majority.

Following the straw vote, here were the results for President:

Another speaker, U.S. Senator James DeMint (R-South Carolina), said, “We don’t want the government pushing our religion, but we don’t want the government purging our society of the values and principles that are derived from religion.”

And former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee commented, “We must realize there is a direct connection between the stability of families and the stability of our economy.

“I’m so tired of people telling me we don’t want to hear about the issues of the family.”

President Obama attends church

The media noticed

That should not be a headline, but President Obama’s church attendance is so rare it made headlines last week.

Amidst growing concern by the public about the President’s faith, the President made his appearance quite public.

A recent poll had some interesting results:

So, shortly after the controversial poll, Obama attended the historic St. John’s Church in Washington, D.C.

The pastor said, “If there is no change to how you live your life, you have to ask yourself the question: ‘Have I committed myself at all to follow the Christ or not? I think the honest thing that we can do when we commit ourselves to follow the Christ is this: To commit as much of ourselves as we can to God and to the risen Christ. Once you decide to follow the Christ, you also commit yourself to grow in the faith, not to remain static in one place.”

Obama has not joined any church after publicly denouncing Black Libertarian theologian Rev. Jeremiah Wright, in whose church he says he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and where he and his wife attended for over 20 years.

Since being President, he has visited a few local churches (on “special” occasions like Easter) and has attended chapel at Camp David several times.

President omits Creator—accident or on purpose?

You can forget lots of things…but forgetting the Creator?

One of the biggest anomalies about President Obama is confession of being a Christian. Sometimes he has been very forthright about his “Christian” faith, and other times he’s edited out all references. 

Yet when he spoke not long ago (09-15-10) before the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, he created new concerns.

Take a moment to watch and listen to the video (the link is below).

The sad fact is that we have to question whether his omission was a mistake. Unfortunately, many Christians immediately assume it was an act of commission, not omission.

The line in the Declaration of Independence goes as follows:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

The President said the following:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, endowed with certain unalienable rights: life and liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

The President’s printed remarks do not have the declaration at all. It looks like he ad-libbed it—and got it wrong. I don’t think we can say it was an insidious omission—just a mistake.

Certainly, we can’t judge his heart and intent…and as Christians, we must give him the benefit of the doubt. 

Everyone misspeaks sometimes. But a mistake like this should generate an immediate response and clarification from the President. Even school kids know it’s the “Creator.”

Then several days later, at another speech, he again left out “Creator.”

And just as this is going out, a Q & A session with the President has been released where the President was asked, “Why are you a Christian?”

An odd way to describe his faith was that he liked the “precepts” of Christianity. Most Christians would focus on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

California Election heats up

An elected official's best weapon for re-election: Voter ignorance about his/her record

What are evangelicals thinking about this election? As strange as it seems, with many issues and candidates before the voters who could significantly impact their lives, most Christian voters don’t know much about the candidates or ballot issues as this November election cycle approaches.

We conducted an Evangelical Poll to see who evangelicals supported for Governor, Senator, California Supreme Court and two of the initiatives.

The most common complaint among respondents was that they didn’t know enough so that they didn’t feel confident with their choice. In upcoming issues of Reality Alert, we will be highlighting all of the state races that will be appearing on your ballot.

Election 2010: The California Supreme Court

One of the most overlooked—yet important—votes you will cast this November

On the November 2 ballot, you will be voting for 3 California Supreme Court candidates.

You will be asked to vote “yes” or “no.”

California Supreme Court Chief Justice Ron George, who spearheaded denying Californians their choice in voting for traditional marriage, ran from this race in light of his disregard for the voters.

So, a new candidate, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, is running for Chief Justice.

The California Supreme Court has enormous power…and your vote is vital in directing the future of very important decisions impacting every Californian both now and for generations to come.

Here is our brief analysis. For more specific information, come to my talks at the churches, see our website ElectionForum.org or listen to our upcoming webinar. You’ll get the truth from a Christian perspective.

Associate Justice Carlos Moreno—NO

Justice Moreno has been on the Court since 2001, appointed by former Governor Gray Davis. He is a radical liberal. His favorite Supreme Court Judge is liberal David Souter.

Moreno was on Obama’s short list for replacing Souter. He was recommended by Sen. Dianne Feinstein. Obama chose Sonia Sotomayor, probably because of Moreno’s vote for homosexual marriage, thus negating the people’s choice for traditional marriage—may have been thought too controversial (and a stumbling block to confirmation) for President Obama.

Moreno not only voted in the 4-3 decision to overturn traditional marriage with Proposition 23, he was the only “NO” vote in the 6-1 decision that agreed Proposition 8 vote was constitutional.

In the past, he has voted against parental consent, against religious rights and against business.

We recommend a “NO” vote.

Ming William Chin—NO

Ming William Chin was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1996 by Gov. Pete Wilson. Since he’s been on the bench, he has voted to overturn parental consent, consistent with his pro-abortion views.

He shot down Governor Wilson’s attempt to privatize highway jobs.

He voted against Christian contentious objections and for trampling religious liberty.

He did vote in favor of traditional marriage and voted to uphold California’s  anti-affirmative action law.

Despite a few good votes, we recommend a "NO" vote because of his liberal social stands and inconsistency on business/property rights issue.

We recommend a “NO” vote.

Tani Cantil-Sakauye—NO

Governor Schwarzenegger, Jerry Brown and Ron George as a committee approved the appointment to the Court of Tani Cantil-Sakauye as our new California Supreme Court Chief Justice.

She is 50 years old and an active member of the Japanese United Methodist Church in Sacramento, a church with a liberal pastor.

She is considered a “moderate” Republican, leaning liberal on social issues. The liberal Sandra Day O’Connor was her favorite Supreme Court judge.

When the California Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage, she performed a same-sex marriage.

One of her favorite sayings is, “There is no one truth, only versions of it.”  That speaks to a judicial philosophy that bends with political expediency…and frankly, that scares me a bit.

In cases brought before her, she has sided with the nurses union over legitimate cost concerns regarding school district positions, and, she was soft on a teen’s violent treatment to a girlfriend.

On the plus side, she did uphold California’s prohibition against affirmative action and religious free speech.

Her point of view is a mixed bag, but she hasn’t made enough good decisions from the bench or demonstrated a dependable, consistent, philosophical position to earn our recommendation.

We recommend a “NO” vote.

Abortion and Carly Fiorina

Finally, a candidate with the courage to stand up for the lives of unborn children…

Make no mistake about it: Carly Fiorina does not like Roe v. Wade, the controversial 1973 decision by the United States Supreme Court proclaiming a woman had a constitutional right to have an abortion. 

Since Roe v. Wade was decided, politicians have described themselves as “pro-life” (against abortion) or “pro-choice” (favoring a woman's right to kill her unborn child).

Carly Fiorina stated she is pro-life and would "vote to overturn Roe v. Wade."  

The incumbent liberal Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer, running against Fiorina in the November 2, 2010 general election, is a strong pro-choice/pro-abortion candidate.

When Fiorina released her pro-life statement, Boxer’s political handlers jumped all over it, saying that without the protection of Roe, women would be arrested and put in jail!

Nothing could be further from the truth!

The truth is Boxer is falling behind Fiorina in the polls. And Boxer’s statement is nothing more than a ridiculous claim made by a desperate politician trying to hold onto her job at the expense of the voters of California, the nation and hundreds of thousands of unborn children because of her callous disregard for their God-given right to reach full-term.

Like any desperate politician, Boxer twists the truth to her point of view, completely losing the message of hope and life. Boxer is just one more liberal politician who favors putting the expediency of politics over the sanctity of life.

When Roe v. Wade was capriciously legislated by the Supreme Court, jails weren’t filled with women—they were filled by back street abortionists whose only goal was to kill an unborn baby. Before Roe v. Wade, there were only two victims: The baby and its mother.

There have been millions of children whose lives were needlessly taken because of a misplaced judicial interpretation. They were clear examples of the country’s highest Court legislating from the bench.

Since the decision, however, the issue of abortion has become the litmus test for politicians and high court nominees.

Carly’s message is one that recognizes Roe v. Wade as a bad ruling.

In fact, in an interview on Fox News with Chris Wallace (6/10/2010), she said, “…most Californians disagree with Barbara Boxer’s extreme views. She believes in taxpayer funding for partial birth abortions. Most Californians don’t agree with that…”

You’re right, Carly!

Perhaps no one has summed up the consequences of abortion better than 1988 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Mother Teresa, who said, “If I had power, I’d open a jail…and put every single doctor in jail for killing life, killing a child, a gift from God.”

City salaries and pensions—out of control

The unbelievable salaries in the city of Bell are just the ”tip of the iceberg”…

Do you know what your city is doing with your money?

Until this year, most of us have ignored the abuses taking place at the city level. The fact is, we didn’t realize how out of control those abuses were. But then came the million dollar salaries/pensions fiasco in the City of Bell, and we all became far more aware of what was being spent … and who was making what.

But cities (and their constituencies) seldom question or discuss the bloated salaries/benefits. Let’s take a look at El Segundo:

Are these salaries and benefits abnormal? Frighteningly, they aren’t.  Take a look at the following City Managers. They do what the city council wants; they’re professional ladder climbers who often move from city to city to increase their pay and pensions.

NOTE:  These are salaries only, and do NOT include the pensions and benefits that could double (or triple) their base pay:

In other words, these guys don’t worry about their jobs, being fired, or facing a cut in salary like those who work in the private sector. And they make far more money than Governor Schwarzenegger (he makes $173,987— the highest in the nation).

If this seems unsettling, among those government employees drawing $100,000 plus salaries are dozens of other city and county employees, commission members, police and fire employees. Your tax dollars support 2,256,634 state, county and local government employees—up the last two years and growing…despite the recession.

In the past, being a public employee and serving others was a privilege, not an entitlement. 

But today, city councils, Boards of Supervisors and other governing bodies too often look the other way and do not do what is right … just what is expedient…and we taxpayers wind up footing the bill! It seems everybody gets along just fine at the expense of the taxpayer.

Bloated salary abuse was common knowledge, but no one mentioned it or questioned it. Until now.

Excessive salaries and benefits may not be fraud, but it’s unethical, immoral and an abuse of the trust taxpayers once had in their elected officials and government.

If you don’t know what your city officials make (both base salary and benefits), you should…it’s a matter of public record. Demand it.

If this upsets you, vote for city council members who will commit to demanding a salary/pension/benefit audit.  It’s time to return the city workforce to public servants who want to serve—not make a career of gouging the taxpayers.

Militant Atheist Alert

Pray for the man's health and soul

Christians worldwide have been praying for militant atheist author (God Is Not Great) and TV personality Christopher Hitchens.

Hitchens is dying of esophageal cancer. The last time I heard him debate, he used distorted and select history to attack and mock Christians.

No deathbed conversion for Hitchens?

Hitchens has pledged “he would never make a deathbed conversion unless he was “very ill” or “half demented, by … pain where I wouldn’t have control over what I say.”

“I can’t say that entity…[the man who would convert on his deathbed] wouldn’t be me.” But while he’s still lucid, Hitchens said he “wouldn’t do such a pathetic thing. Don’t believe it,” Hitchens announced in advance to those who heard any rumors of a planned deathbed conversion.

Please pray for Hitchens and that God’s love will break through.

Bad public teachers = untaught kids and uncertain futures

Who grades the graders? Sounds like the fox guarding the chicken coop!

In Los Angeles, 99.1% of all teachers are rated “meets standards.”  Less than 1% ever are rated “below standard”.

One would think that since over 99% of those teaching ‘met the standards’ that their results would be reflected in the test scores of those they teach. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. 

Teacher competence and student achievement are mutually exclusive according to the teacher’s union…one has nothing to do with the other!

You see, bad teachers don’t get replaced. Great teachers don’t get rewarded. And hundreds of thousands of kids get inferior educations.

One of the great tragedies of this budget crisis is that local school districts automatically are forced to keep tenured teachers and new teachers were let go.

And many of the new teachers were great…and tenured teachers, useless.

What about your school district? My wife taught high school for over 15 years. She says at the public state schools (she largely taught inner city at risk kids), easily 1/3 of all teachers should be fired for incompetence and/or indifference.

But they can’t be fired because of tenure and protection from their unions!

Judicial activism on the rise once again

When did the ACLU become neither "American" nor protect our Civil Liberties?

Across the United States, schools holding graduation ceremonies at churches are under attack for alleged violations of the separation of church and state.

Last month a federal district judge stopped the Enfield Public School district from using a Baptist church for their graduation ceremony.

At graduation ceremonies, space and tickets were at a premium. There just weren’t enough seats. That’s why this school chose the larger church setting. And then the ACLU butted in, saying that the use of the school would bring church and state far closer than allowed by the Constitution. 

But—get this—a pro-family Christian conservative group upset over the ACLU wanting to block the church use, was cited by the judge as a reason to block it!

The judge ruled against the school based upon the organization’s beliefs.

So because the ceremony is at a church…and supported by a conservative Christian based organization—the church is to be discriminated against and treated as a second class institution.

Besides being a bad decision…it put all Christians on notice their beliefs were inferior … and you can’t publically mention your beliefs for fear of offending someone. But if you’re secular, you’re superior in rights, recognition and community standing.

Liberal Arrogance: Scientist fired

At UCLA, being politically correct trumps academic freedom and free speech

After 36 years, a professor at UCLA was told he would not be rehired because his ‘research is not aligned with the academic mission’ of his department because his scientific beliefs are “politically incorrect.”

Of course, UCLA’s position was that Dr. James Enstrom’s politics have nothing to do with its decision to terminate him.

Enstrom, an epidemiologist at UCLA’s School of Public Health, says his studies show no causal link between diesel soot and death in California—findings that set him apart from his liberal colleagues and put him in direct conflict with the California Air Resources Board.

The Air Resources Board claims its new standards on diesel emissions will save 9,400 lives between 2011 and 2025 and will reduce health care costs by as much as $68 billion in the state.

Those opposed to this claim also point to a million lost jobs and a further crippling of California’s economy.

Enstrom questions the science behind the Air Board’s emissions standards, and he has raised concerns about the two key reports on which they were based—exposing the author of one study as having faked his credentials and the panel that issued the other study as having violated its term limits.

So much for academic freedom and the pursuit of truth at UCLA.

  1. Pray for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal’s review of Judge Walker’s ruling on the Proposition 8 case.
  2. Pray for our President, Senate and Congress as they make important decisions affecting our lives, the lives of our children and grandchildren, and the lives of those yet unborn.
  3. Pray that someday teacher tenure will be eliminated and that only teaching excellence and student grades will be the determining factor for a teacher’s continued employment.

“Our church family, ‘The River Center’ in Lebanon, OR, bought the old WalMart store and converted it into a church. We now use only a portion of the building, but as God moves we will expand into the whole facility, giving us ample room for expansion. We lease half of the building to a company on a five-year lease…church families need to seek God for direction in providing large, existing facilities rather than building from the ground up…if you want to expand, why build when there are buildings ready to remodel and quickly put into use for God?”

Political power grab

“Environmentalism, same sex marriage, abortion, building a mosque at ground zero and all the other liberal nonsense being defended under a perversion of the first amendment is about one thing...political power.

“This reminds me of the old John Wayne maxim-“This life is hard, but it’s harder if you’re stupid.” This does not apply, obviously, to all of us…unfortunately, too many of us have chosen to be ignorant in the name of standing for nothing. Choosing to be ignorant is equivalent to moral and intellectual cowardice. When you are ignorant, anyone can frighten you. Unfortunately, this has been the case for 40 years and it’s getting worse by the day.

Why we’re pushed around by small groups…

Churches are silent…and take Jesus for granted…

“Thank you for all of the work you put into the Election Forum emails.  It is good to see your comments and admonitions to try and bring awareness to issues of great concern to Christians.

“…I see a compelling need for people to get back to studying the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Disregard for the sanctity of marriage, tolerating illegal immigration, reaching teenagers [and more] is the result of Christians including you and me taking Jesus for granted.

Unhappy California voter…

“I really don't understand how they [judicial activists on the Court] can overturn what the voters of California voted for…not once but twice. It makes voters feel as though voting does not make any difference…I am a very unhappy California voter.”

The Judge should marry a dog…

A known homosexual should never have judged this case…

I saved myself a lot of time and anguish about the twisted agenda of this judge by reading his conclusion.

“I didn't have to go any further after I saw that Judge Walker, a known homosexual, openly displayed that he had been personally insulted by Prop 8. There was no way he should have judged this case…

“Here are the comments that show how personally he took the issue and how there was no attempt on his part to be unbiased and be a judge rather than a turn-society-upside-down activist. How sad for California that we have men of such little integrity in positions of trust.

"The evidence shows conclusively that Proposition 8 enacts, without reason, a private moral view that same-sex couples are inferior to opposite-sex couples."

[Judge Walker] should be impeached and removed from office

“Regarding the Prop 8 decision, since when have voters ever been subjected to a litmus test to determine whether their reasons for voting the way they do are ‘correct’? Were those who voted against Proposition 8 subjected to such a litmus test?

“Judge Walker’s arrogance does not tolerate democracy and self-government…

“[The many] contributions by both fathers and mothers to child-rearing are only a few of the rational bases for millennia-old views on traditional marriage. Judge Walker’s views are the irrational ones…

“If he believes there is no God…then survival of the fittest (specifically, the ability to reproduce in the natural environment), would favor traditional marriage and the exclusion of homosexual marriage from a rational mind. Judge Walker’s opinion is not in the rational category.

“…Judge Walker’s decision should be declared unconstitutional because he has violated the separation of powers in the U.S. Constitution. He is nothing less than a dictator who has abused his power as an unelected federal judge. He should be impeached and removed from office.”

“The first casualty of socialism is charity. Leave it to our wonderful 'enlightened' liberals to call sanity irrational. Just as a point of interest, the American Psychological Association is in the process of re-evaluating disorders. What it really means is that ‘if you disagree with anything we say, you have a disorder.’ So, for example, if you believe in God, you have a mental disorder or you are guilty of hate speech. This is another example of how sin darkens the intellect. 'Better you should put a millstone around your neck and go into the sea than to corrupt one of my young ones.”
