  • Wild Presidential Election Brings Surprises

Will it be Hillary or Obama? At this point, Hillary is fighting to stay viable in this race.

And most have acknowledged McCain has the Republican nomination...except for Huckabee and his conservative and evangelical supporters.

Reality Alert's focus is on California...and less than 1,000 subscribers are outside of California. For California, the primary is over and we must now watch the other state elections.

The next few stories will give you an update on what is happening:

Dobson Won't Vote for McCain—Endorses Huckabee

Dr. James Dobson says he will not vote for John McCain in November.

And he has personally endorsed Governor Mike Huckabee.

Here is what Dr. Dobson said:

"I am deeply disappointed the Republican Party seems poised to select a nominee who did not support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage, voted for embryonic stem-cell research to kill nascent human beings, opposed tax cuts that ended the marriage penalty, has little regard for freedom of speech, organized the Gang of 14 to preserve filibusters in judicial hearings, and has a legendary temper and often uses foul and obscene language.

"I am convinced Sen. McCain is not a conservative, and in fact, has gone out of his way to stick his thumb in the eyes of those who are. He has sounded at times more like a member of the other party. McCain actually considered leaving the GOP caucus in 2001, and approached John Kerry about being Kerry's running mate in 2004.

"McCain also said publicly that Hillary Clinton would make a good president. Given these and many other concerns, a spoonful of sugar does NOT make the medicine go down. I cannot, and will not, vote for Sen. John McCain, as a matter of conscience.

"But what a sad and melancholy decision this is for me and many other conservatives. Should Sen. McCain capture the nomination as many assume, I believe this general election will offer the worst choices for president in my lifetime.

"I certainly can't vote for Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama based on their virulently anti-family policy positions. If these are the nominees in November, I simply will not cast a ballot for president for the first time in my life. These decisions are my personal views and do not represent the organization with which I am affiliated.

"They do reflect my deeply held convictions about the institution of the family, about morals and spiritual beliefs, and about the welfare of our country."

Huckabee Continues as the Conservative Alternative

Defying the media and liberal critics, Governor Mike Huckabee could still win the Wisconsin, Texas, and Ohio primaries.

It's an almost impossible quest, but he is the only viable alternative to McCain.

Unfortunately, most conservative talk show hosts, conservative leaders and media have not gotten behind him.

To see a Huckabee campaign statement after his southern wins—a great talk—click here.

And if you'd like to help make telephone calls for Governor Huckabee or contribute, go to www.MikeHuckabee.com.

    Catholics and Huckabee

Many Catholics have been reluctant to support Mike Huckabee. Bill May of the Catholics for the Common Good had a few interesting insights on this:

"There is a huge difference between Pat Robertson and Huckabee. Robertson is a lifelong professional minister and Christian political leader—that is it.

"Huckabee is a secular political and civic leader and a former lt. governor and governor (almost 11 years), with a distinguished record of secular leadership.

"Huckabee is the only candidate who has been an advocate for pro-life issues. He got five bills through the Democratic legislature in Arkansas: partial birth abortion, parental notification, women's right to know, fetal pain and liberal hospital drop-off provisions for newborns.

"It really annoys me to hear people call Huckabee liberal. As governor, Huckabee cut taxes almost 100 times. He eliminated the capital gains tax on home sales, reduced them for individuals and businesses and eliminated taxes for those below the poverty line. He indexed tax rates to avoid tax creep with inflation. He also was able to get enough people off welfare that the budget was reduced by 50%.

"The folks in the boardroom are not going to like Huckabee because he is a Christian and a man of the people. I think Huckabee has an opportunity to reform and broaden the Republican Party. He could put the Reagan Democratic coalition back together and attract a lot of Catholic crossover votes. I think Huckabee is the most electable of the field."

A Dramatic Shift in Christian Voters?

"Born again" voters as opposed to "evangelical voters" (click here for definitions) have shown a dramatic shift.

In 2004, born again Christians voted 62% to 38% for President Bush over John Kerry.

The total "born again" vote was almost ½ of the total U.S. vote.

According to a new survey by Barna, 40% will vote Democratic in 2008 and only 29% will vote Republican. The remaining 28% are unsure who they will vote for.

Among the evangelicals, 11% will vote Democratic in 2008 and 45% Republican. Another 40% of evangelicals are undecided.

The above survey is probably pretty reliable. GodTube.com is a web-based Christian site. No way they could verify their survey results. But even if they are partially true, the results should be of great concern!

    • 26.3% for Obama
    • 19.6% for Hillary
    • 45.1% for Huckabee
    • 9.19% for McCain
Tell me what you think this means and its implications at craig@electionforum.org.

    Surprising Ron Paul Update

Dr. Ron Paul is now concentrating his efforts on surviving a tough primary challenge to his Congressional seat. His response and time have shifted to surviving the primary challenges.

His primary opponent has raised more money than he has...and he can't use any of his presidential campaign money for his house race.

He has said he will not support John McCain. And he will not run as a third-party candidate.

Ron Paul Supporters "SPAM" Reality Alert

When we endorsed Mike Huckabee, Reality Alert got lots of hate email nationwide. I found out why, for many of them. This was posted on a Ron Paul website:

Christian Voter Guide...SPAM this guy PLEASE...Ron Paul Forums

Dr. Ron Paul and I have worked on projects together. And I respect him. I've had long conversations with him. He would not condone this activity.

It's a shame some of his supporters acted so irresponsibly.

    Obamataxomics: Bad Economics

Barrack Obama has just released the latest in his spend, spend, tax, tax, tax programs. This new one: $197 billion a year for economic job creation.

         Three problems:

    • It will lead to inflation

    • It will create a recession

    • It will kill real job creation

    Obama Faith Confession

What Obama said to Christianity today:

"I am a devout Christian. I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful."

    The Black Church and Obama

Day Gardner, president of the National Black Pro-Life Union had some harsh words for some black church pastors supporting Obama.

"I was very disturbed by an article published on January 7, 2008 in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution which stated that Sen. Barack Obama garnered praise and prayers from several African American pulpits for his landmark victory in the Iowa caucuses.

"Senator Obama doesn't care that abortion has obliterated the rights of more than 15 million black children since 1973. He doesn't care that abortion is the number one killer of African Americans surpassing deaths caused by accidents, heart disease, stroke, crime, HIV/AIDS and all other deaths...combined!

"He won't make one of his powerful speeches decrying the injustice of abortion providers who plant killing centers firmly in black communities—making it easier to kill black children.

"Instead, he actually applauds their efforts! These children are denied their most basic human right—which is right to life; a right which our ancestors so proudly worked for, marched for and many of them died for."

What do you think? Why are black pastors ignoring value issues such as marriage or abortion?

        Email me at craig@electionforum.org.

    Are Younger Evangelicals Liberal?

If you listen to liberal evangelicals, 18–34-year-old Christians are actually liberal on many issues.

Do you believe this is true?

A survey by Relevant Magazine had these findings:

    • 28% felt Barack Obama was the candidate Jesus would most likely vote for

    • 24% felt it was Mike Huckabee

    • 39% thought illegal immigration was the most important issue; 10% said it was least important.

    • 22% said abortion is the most important issue; 11% said least.
What do you think? Email me at craig@electionforum.org.

Good News on Long Beach High School Lawsuit

In a previous issue of Reality Alert we told you about Christopher Rand, a student who was denied full school credit for doing school-required community service at his church rather than for his municipality.

The school district has revised its policy to include religious organizations—and Christopher's 70 hours of service will count.

This is a great victory for First Amendment rights and stops discrimination against students' religious beliefs.

Thanks to Chris for taking a stand.

Why Tax Cuts—Not Hikes—Lead to Economic Growth for Everyone

Economists estimate that each dollar of broad tax cuts leads to $1.26 in economic growth. Head of the National Bureau of Economic Research estimates that a $1 tax hike costs the economy 76 cents in output. That explains why the economy jumps each time there's a tax cut.

Tax Facts You Won't Hear from Liberal Candidates

From 1986 to 2004, the total share of the income tax burden paid by the top 1% of income earners grew by nearly half, rising from 25.8% to 36.9%. Over that same time, the burden of the bottom 50% of earners was almost halved, falling from 6.5% to 3.3%.

The Truth about Healthcare in America

An interesting quote on the idea of socialized universal healthcare:

"Every candidate who repeats the misleading nonsense that '47 million in America have no healthcare,' ought to be challenged with the hard truth. The number is grossly inflated by including millions who are here illegally and millions of others who have the means to pay for healthcare insurance but refuse to adjust their budget and lifestyle. And don't expect any media type to question where in the Constitution Congress derives any authority to dispense healthcare."

—Janet LaRue, Chief Counsel for Concerned Women for America

    Sacramento Alert: More Regulation

Instead of solving the over $15 billion California budget deficit, these liberal politicians are figuring more ways to restrict churches and Christian organizations.

The assembly approved a bill that would force nonprofit organizations to publicly disclose the sexual orientation of its board members and the number of grants or funds to help homosexual groups.

AB624 is only for those groups that have assets of $250 million or more. This bill is unacceptable for any small organization, but for small Christian groups, it's the first step to forcing political correctness.

It's none of the government's business. It's a blunt attempt to direct more funds to specific homosexual projects and to start regulating all groups.

Contact your state senator and let them know you oppose AB624.

    Pro-Life Radio Ads

The Second Look Project is running anti-abortion radio ads in San Francisco (click here to hear them)

Planned Parenthood in a push to silence the ads is asking the local radio stations to stop the ads because they spread "lies" and "gross inaccuracies."

Pray for the success of the ads and the stations not giving in to the pro-abortion demands.

    Religious Freedom Victory

In a past issue of Reality Alert, we told you about two lesbian girls who filed suit against California Lutheran High Schools in Windermere. They were expelled saying that California discrimination against their lesbian relationship was opposed to California law even in a Christian school.

Thankfully, Riverside County Judge Gloria Trask ruled in favor of religious freedom.

Keep this in prayer—it's been appealed.

This again shows the importance of voting for the right judges.

    The Most Miserable California Cities

Forbes Magazine released the list of the most miserable American cities for 2007. This is based on commuter times, income tax rates, crime, weather, taxes and more.

Despite our great weather, Modesto was #8, Los Angeles #7, and Stockton #2. Incidentally, the worst was Detroit, MI.

The Top 10 Worst Religious Persecution Countries in 2007

Open Doors Ministry released its 2008 world watch list which reviews where Christians receive the most persecution.

    1. North Korea
    2. Saudi Arabia
    3. Iran
    4. Maldives
    5. Bhutan
    6. Yemen
    7. Afghanistan
    8. Laos
    9. Uzbekistan
    10. China
An estimated 200 million Christians worldwide suffer interrogation, discrimination, arrest, prison and death.

United Nations Corruption Squanders Millions Instead of Helping Sudan

Typical of the U.N. is waste and corruption. This time it's tens of millions of dollars that should have helped the desperate condition in the Sudan over the last three years.

Corrupt contracts, bribes, waste and mismanagement versus churches and charities that with a fraction of the money could have helped thousands.

    Letters from Our Readers

    On Hillary's Breakdown

"This is one of the only times I think that Hillary is being genuine. In this case, it also isn't a sign of weakness (as Edwards has suggested).

"Tears are quite often NOT a show of weakness but reaction to circumstances you feel passionate and genuine about. If a man were to do this...again it would depend on the circumstances.

"Would this make me vote more for Hillary...in this 'no' because of Hillary's past and her philosophies/ ideals which don't make her the better person for this job."

       —Sharon

    On Ron Paul

"I just read your article on why Christians should not vote for Ron Paul. You supported his positions on the economy and pro-life consistency. I am just surprised that the reason you will not recommend Christians to vote for Ron Paul is because of war.

"I think it is odd that you are saying Christians should promote war. I am unsure of what you mean by Ron Paul's national defense stands. What exactly are his stands? From what I understand, Ron Paul is for a strong national defense. He wants to secure our own borders, not the borders of Iraq.

"I would rather take Jesus' advice on what Christians should be, loving and forgiving, not starting wars in countries that pose no threat to us. However, I thank you for at least acknowledging Ron Paul's existence."

       —Fabio

"I just read your article entitled 'Why not Ron Paul?'

"I am a Christian and I am completely baffled by the lack of support Dr. Paul is receiving from the Christian community. Why on earth have Christians become so war-hungry? What happened to the Christian ('Christ- like') doctrine against pre-emptive war?

"It seems that the Christian community has become deceived by the flag-waving, 'patriotic' idea that it is the duty of the United States to attack every country that we don't agree with or that the media tries to portray as a threat to us.

"It goes against everything that the Lord taught us as His followers.

"Ron Paul is a Christian man whose message of liberty and following the Constitutional rule of law has never changed.

"My prayer is that God will awaken His people to the truth of what is happening to our country—that our freedoms and privacy are being destroyed for the sake of 'safety.'"

On Black Pastors and Values Voting

"I have always wondered why black pastors support candidates that are against their own values.

"They must be mad at the Republicans and secondly, I wonder if it's because they just plain love themselves and their own self-interests more than God and God's interests."

       —Sandy

    On Christian Voters

"I'd like to further comment on how Christians seem to have become one-issue voters. That issue is the war.

"Why is it that we, who worship the Prince of Peace, are so in love with war? Why will we compromise on or consider anything else, but the war? You've compromised on fiscal conservatism and individual liberties (as issues), and personal integrity and consistency (as to character) with Huckabee.

"Many/most others are compromising on abortion, conservative principles, and again integrity and consistency of character with McCain and Romney.

"Just so long as they support the war.

"Christians look at a candidate like Ron Paul, who represents every bit of the Christian and conservative ideals we hold dear, but discount him offhand because he has ideas about keeping America safe that don't involve this war. I've observed this personally as I talk to Christians about the candidates, and so have many other folks.

"What strikes me is not so much whether the war is actually justified or merited or not, it's that Christians are completely unwilling to consider it in logical terms or become educated about it in any way. It's a prerequisite, a foregone conclusion, something not open for evaluation whatsoever.

"As I said, they will literally compromise on ANYTHING but the war when choosing their candidates."

       —Matthew

    On Mike Huckabee

"In the consideration of a candidate, I look not at just one issue, but many. I do not believe a candidate is a "savior" anymore than I believe the government is.

"The issues of the heart are what is most important for any of us. It is from the heart that we all act. Therefore the issues are of the utmost importance. It further follows that a candidate's or government's positions of the issues (not "fronted" positions, but actual heart positions) are of the utmost importance.

"Since men act from the standpoint of their beliefs, and their actions impact others, a voter needs to know the beliefs of the candidates. This is one reason I really like Huckabee and Reagan. I know what they believe so I can anticipate how they will act. They aren't poll watchers. They have convictions beyond personal ambition and power.

"The most critical issue, far outweighing all the others, is Life. Without life we cannot exercise any liberties or pursue happiness or pass anything on to the generations that follow us. Without Life we cannot impact our world. If life is not held to be a precious God-given inalienable right, if it is not esteemed as a precious priceless gift, then the other freedoms we hold so dear will quickly be lost.

"Our founding fathers, in the Declaration of Independence from England, recognized not only their dependence upon God, the Supreme Judge, but the God-given (not to be usurped by man or government) inalienable, self-evident, incontrovertible, ineffable, axiomatic right to Life above all the other rights.

"The most critical and telling issue is the Right to Life from conception to natural death.

"The next most important issue is personal character. Personal character is what makes or breaks anyone.

"Our character is defined and founded upon how we truly think. The saying that 'as a man thinks in his heart, so is he' is profoundly true. The most a candidate can do in this area is influence by personal example and praising excellent character wherever they find it.

"I think Mike Huckabee can be trusted as much as any of the other candidates and probably more than most. Although many have accused Huckabee of improprieties, I have felt, after doing some due diligence in checking upon their accusations, that the explanations have been acceptable.

"For my part I want a candidate who has faith in and a personal relationship with the Creator and Supreme Authority of the Universe our founding fathers so heavily leaned upon and acknowledged in all their writings. They particularly acknowledged their Dependence on God their seminal American political work, the Declaration of Independence from tyranny.

"The Supreme Judge of the Universe is not only the Creator, he is not only the Author of our very lives, but He is the Author of Freedom itself. It is he alone that gave us the freedom to choose or reject Him.

"It is He alone who has broken the tyrannous chains of sin and death. It is He Who with the Truth sets us free from every lie and deception. Truly God is the Author of Life and Liberty. Man will have no lasting liberty unless he enlists the Author of Liberty.

"Taxes are important because they impact our liberties through financial limitations and manipulations. After examining Huckabee's positions and past actions, including the Club for Growth, the Cato Institute, and the others are working for other interests than mine and the common man's.

"On the tax issues I trust Huckabee. When I examined his decisions while the Governor of Arkansas, I found myself (a strong proponent of lower taxes at all levels of government and cutting out the fat) thinking that his decisions made sense."

    —Robert
