Why Not Romney?
Here is a brief review why I don’t believe Mitt Romney is as good a candidate for conservative voters.
I like Mitt Romney in many ways. He’s smart and articulate. And he would be good in a debate against a liberal opponent.
I like his management ability. As a businessman and entrepreneur, he has the qualities that could help him be a good president.
And his understanding of the problems businesses have with regulations, taxes and frivolous lawsuits would be a tremendous asset.
But I’m worried about his recent past liberal positions on abortion, marriage and judicial appointments. After 60 years as a liberal, he says he has changed his position in the last few years. I’d like to see greater consistency. He’s a problem solver, but is he a consistent conservative?
In addition...
- Romney supports his socialized healthcare plan in Massachusetts, which costs are skyrocketing.
- He still defends federal and state employment nondiscrimination laws, which has undermine a free society.
- He is weak on 2nd Amendment rights, supporting the Brady Bill, and often gun control laws.
- As governor he appointed liberals, though he says he will now only appoint strict constructionists.
- He supports federal money for pet projects, including pandering to the Detroit auto industry with federal monies.
- He supports big government progress such as the Department of Education.
Romney demonstrates great conservative ideas on social, economic and national defense issues. But I worry about consistency and conviction.
I also have concern about the 10% to 20%—maybe more—Evangelicals who won’t vote for him because he is a Mormon.
Romney could be a great candidate. But there are too many issues of big concern.
